Indifference:: Metri's Note

The second training was finished, I rushed by at a speed I'd never attempted before. I was so pumped up! I thought I would be tired, but I felt like I could run a million miles, take down a million hunters, whatever those were, and live to tell the tale! I darted up the narrow staircase, not even losing my footing and ran down the hall until I saw what I recognized a Metri shaped lump inside one of the rooms. I sighed, my energy spurt over.

I walked into the dimly lit room, knocking on the open door as I did so. "Metri? Metri, are you awake?" Metri laid on the bed, which still lacked a mattress from the previous night. He had a wine bottle loosely gripped in his hand. I walked up close to him and took the bottle from his hand. Every drop of it was gone. Completely emptied of all alcohol it previously held. I grimaced as I tossed it in the trash can.

I placed my hand on Metri's back and shook him slightly. It took many tries before he was even somewhat awake, and then he only muttered gibberish. I knew he was still in a dreaming state. He mumbled my name and a tear ran down his face. Metri never cried, even when he was drunk before, but now I'd seen him cry more than three times in the past few days. It hurt me.

"Metri!" I shook him some more, a little harder this time, "Come on, wake up."

He opened his eyes and put his hand against his head, "Ai-lllll…ee" he muttered, "'M sorry Aileh… L-let chu… Let…" He began to lose consciousness once more, so I held him up. I wondered what he had dreamt about. Surely something terrible. I'd been treating him like he was a monster. He wasn't. I knew that, so why did I keep torturing him?

I put my hand against his forehead; a gesture that usually calmed him down when he had too much to drink. This time, unlike any other, he pushed my hand away. "No, no, n-no! Ail-eeee, I h-hurt…" he hiccupped, "hurt chu." I put my hand back against his forehead, and this time it calmed him a little, but he still muttered.

Metri had never been this drunk the entire time I'd known him. Sitting this close to him I could smell all sorts of alcoholic beverages. A lot of beer, quite a bit of vodka, and more wine than I'd ever known him to drink were the most heavy smells in his clothing. The single wine bottle was the only  I found; I was sure he'd thrown the others away. It hurt me, but I knew in my heart he'd done this knowing I would find him this way.

"Come on," I lifted him up and force walked him across the room, "Let's go wake you up, okay?" I dragged his semi-unconscious body straight across the hallway into the bathroom. I turned on the faucet with one hand, while somehow managing to lift Metri up with the other. I splashed large amounts of the freezing water on him until he finally became aware of his surroundings.

He shook his head rapidly, his eyes widening as he looked around. Finally he focused his eyes on me, "Ailee! Why are we in the bathroom?"

I almost laughed. He'd soaked me when he tossed his head, "You passed out in your room. I found you laying on the supporting part of your bed." I think for a moment changed my attitude. I threw my hand back and slapped him across the face as hard as I could, "Don't you EVER do that to me again, Metri Avens!" A bright red hand mark shown across his face.

Tear filled his eyes, but he didn't cry. He just touched the side of his face and stared at me a moment before looking down at the ground. "I know…" he still slurred his words, but a little bit less, "And I'm sorry for putting your note back together… I know it was supposed to be a private thing but I needed to know…" he trailed off.

"It's okay, Metri." I told him and smiled a little bit. He didn't smile back. I knew he was expecting what was about to come, "Metri…you know I didn't come ever to do that. The note you left me…what did you need to tell me?"

He looked at me for a few minutes and softly bit his lip. He was so nervous about something. I could see it in his eyes before he asked. "It…was more of a question I wanted to ask you…" he sighed and looked around, even more nervous than before. "Why did you never..? Never mind…forget it." He began to leave the room but I caught his arm and pulled him back.

"Just ask me, Metri."

"Wh-why did you never kiss me..?" He looked into my eyes as if he could see the universe. He then looked away and his face flushed only the tiniest bit.

I sighed. I didn't know how I could answer it. Truth is, I always wanted to…but right now it just didn't seem right. My heart fluttered, slowly though, and a chill went up my spine. I searched my soul for an answer, but couldn't find any that wouldn't upset him. "Metri…how am I supposed to answer that..?" I looked at the hand print I'd left. I didn't even know I could do that.

"I don't know…never mind. You're going through so much already…I can't believe I've done this, I've gone and screwed up already…" He ran out of the room, but this time I couldn't catch him. I didn't even know he could run so fast.

"Metri don't go!" I called after him. I looked into his room and started to walk over to clean it up, but a hand grabbed me and pulled me into another room. The hand had been Mesai's but Cosheen was in the room too. They seemed jittery. I worried about what was going on.

"Ailee, we need to talk," Cosheen said.
